Gothic Architecture

Gothic Architecture had evolved from "Romanesque," everything and everyone at the time was obsessed with sin and Death. Almost as though times were dark, [Even though the Dark Ages were yet to come], and the architecture before that had shown it as buildings were a heavy dark mass supported by thick walls, and very little windows...

Sugers idea was to emphasize the integration of light with lightness since an entire area was covered in rib vaults, supported by pointed arches.

Here are some terms defined to better understand:

  • Ribbed Valuts- The use of columns to support the weight of a building.

  • Piers- A vertical support used to bear loads in an arched or vaulted structure.

  • Flying Buttress- An exterior structure comprised of thin half-arches or flyers.

  • Pointed arches- The intersection of two arcs of nonconentric circles.

  • Chevet- East end of the Church, comprising the Choir, Ambulatory, and Apse.

  • Window Tracery- Ornamental work consisting of an interlacing work of lines; Ribs, Bars, etc., in the upper part of a gothic window , in panels and screens.

  • The Skeleton- All of the features forming a skeletal structure; Biologists would describe as exoskeletal.
